Suffering From Shoulder Pain?
If suffering from shoulder pain, help can be found at Movement Chiropractic located in Burke VA.
What are the causes of shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain is typically a musculoskeletal issue originating from one of the three main joints in the area or from the five main muscles in the area called the rotator cuff. Shoulder pain generally arises due to problems with the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made up of a group of five muscles and their tendons connecting the humerus, shoulder blade and collarbone, which allows the shoulder to have such a vast range of motion. The shoulder has a large range of motion and can easily be made unstable through injury to the muscles and joints in the area. Another common mechanism for injury is when the shoulder is put under stress in a weakened position such as lifting without proper form or a forward rolled shoulder.
When the rotator cuff becomes trapped beneath the bony area of the shoulder, pain occurs. Additionally, when a structural imbalance is present, muscles can become chronically tight causing radiating pain. This condition is known as rotator cuff tendinitis or bursitis.
When should you see a doctor for shoulder pain?
In general, ice packs and rest may be sufficient in relieving minor shoulder pain. However, you should see a doctor if shoulder pain remains after several days of at-home care or chronic on/off symptoms. In addition, if you feel unusual warmth in the area, have limited mobility in your arm, hear clicking with range of motion, experience weakness, or feel radiation down the arm you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Go as soon as possible.
What treatments are recommended for shoulder pain?
The prescribed treatment for shoulder pain should be based on the source of the pain. With that in mind, Dr. Go will perform an initial health history consultation with you to determine your symptoms and your medical history. Then he will perform a physical examination.
In addition to spinal manipulation, chiropractic adjustments, and muscular therapy, Dr. Go will suggest a number of stretches and exercises you can perform to gradually reduce pain and improve range of motion in your shoulder. To find a solution for your shoulder pain, contact Movement Chiropractic for an appointment with Dr. Go.
